Moldovan historian: “Latin alphabet is castration of Moldovan nation”

Read it in Russian

“The Latin alphabet is castration of the Moldovan language and the Moldovan nation. No matter how sad it is to acknowledge it, the Moldavians are castrates. Since the time when in 1989 the Romanian Nazism has become the official ideology in the country, the Moldavians were pronounced ‘foul Romanians,’ and the Moldovan language was switched to the Romanian alphabet, our nation has become impotent and failed to invent anything new. All projects alternative to the Romanian one came to the country from the outside, the role of the Moldavians was reduced to choosing from the assortment put upon them and the only thing our government could do was bletcherous bargaining about our identity and geopolitical orientation,” the Moldavian historian, political analyst, member of the editorial board of Moldovatoday.net Oles Stan said on May 23, commenting to a REGNUM correspondent a statement made by Moldova's President Vladimir Voronin that the Cyrillic alphabet was the first alphabet of the Moldavian nation.

“It is nice that our president Mr. Voronin has finally decided to resort to the history and recall the cultural origins of the Moldavian nation, however, I suppose, this won't save the party he is leading anyway. Some other people will be engaged in reviving the Moldavian identity after the 2009 elections,” the analyst believes.

“Our government made pathetic attempts to recall our history before as well,” Stan continued. “When it finally came to understanding of our leadership that the Moldavians did not want to become ‘sub-Romanians’ and that Romania's Anschluss of Moldova would do no good to it either, after the last institution after language, the Moldavian Orthodox Church, was put under threat, the ideologists of the Communist Party of the Republic of Moldova entered a drowsy discussion with Romanian campaigners on what appeared first, eggs or chicken. Unfortunately, the argumentation in the debate reduced to the worn primitive type.”

“The Moldavian elite is stubborn in its unwillingness to learn its history, while the Romanians know their history very well. And it was this knowledge that made them starting crying all over the world so loudly that there are no Moldavians at all, that there are only Romanians that many in the world and in Moldova as well believed them. The Romanians acted in a very clever way: what potentially could be directed against them was aimed against the Moldavians by substitution of meanings. The matter is that any expert in the region's history knows it well that there are no ‘Romanians’ at all. At least, there were no ones some 150 years ago. The Moldavians have not just appeared by 500 years earlier than the Romanians did, the ‘Romanians’ are the foil Moldavians, but not vice versa. ‘The Romanian nation’ as well as the Moldavian language in the Latin alphabet called Romanian were artificially created by Western Europe powers to counter increase of the influence of the Russian Empire in the Balkans after Bessarabia joined it in 1812. After World War I, the same west-European patrons established the Great Romania to their own misfortune, extending its territory and the population of the kingdom by 2.5 times at the expense of annexation of territories of enemies defeated in World War I. As early as in a decade, they witnessed the Romanian Fascism, and another decade later — one of Germany's major allies in the war against themselves. And now the European Union has in the face of the Romanian state one of the most fidgety members, citizens of which are dominating in the European crime chronicle, and the leadership is bothering Europe with its projects of reviving the Great Romania,” the Moldavian historian says.

“As a result, in one of the ancient capitals of the Moldavian Principality, Suceava, Romanian ‘scholars’ are having panels about the ‘anti-scientific’ and ‘anti-historic nature’ of the Moldavian language; in the other Moldavian capital, Iasi, Romanian authorities abolished the organization of the Moldavian Diaspora. However, one cannot conceal the historic truth forever. European bureaucrats starting to get it what games with national identity are fraught with and they preferred to recognize the Moldavian ethnos and draw attention to breach of Moldavians' rights in Romania,” the expert noted.

“For Moldova and its people, this must be a signal to reverse the process of Romanization of the country. The response to the Romanization of Moldavians must be Moldovanization of the Romanians, to be more precise, the process of the Moldavian nation having back its name, history and statehood. For now only within frameworks of the Republic of Moldova. In this connection, the matter should concern not only ‘rehabilitation of the Cyrillic alphabet’ and its ‘coexistence with the Latin alphabet,’ but about the Moldavian language completely switching back to the Cyrillic alphabet.”

“As I stated before, contrary to Moldavians of the Republic of Moldova, Moldavian Diasporas abroad are much more successful in preserving their identity. The matter concerns not only Transdnestr Moldavians, but Moldavians in Northern Bukovina and Southern Bessarabia that are subject of attempts of Romanization from Bucharest on the one hand and attempts of Ukrainization at the state level on the other hand. Development and strengthening of the ties in all fields with Moldavian Diasporas abroad, support for Moldavians in Russia, Romania, Transdnestr and Ukraine must become a part of the governmental policy,” the analyst believes.

“Russians, Gagauz and other nations populating Moldova can become our natural allies in countering the Romanian aggression. This would happen only in case the government grants a corresponding status to the Russian and Gagauz languages and in practice grant equal rights to all nationalities living in the Moldovan territory, i.e. when the mendacious Voronin's declaration that ‘the Republic of Moldova is a caring homeland for all nationalities living in the country’ would acquire its practical meaning. How it can be fulfilled, either by quotas in the parliament for members of all nationalities or territories, or in the form of federation (confederation) and a two-chamber parliament, will be decided by those to replace the Communist Party of the Republic of Moldova next year,” Oles Stan concluded.
