Dmitry Medvedev signs decrees of recognition of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia
On Aug 26, 2008, President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev signed decrees on recognition of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The President announced the decrees live on RTR air.
Dmitry Medvedev thoroughly explained political background of the recognition and Russia's political position, based on fundamental international legal documents. He said Russia calls on other states to follow suit and recognize state sovereignty of the long-suffered nations. He said that that was the only opportunity to save people's lives.
