Georgia used cluster bombs in South Ossetia: Human Rights Watch
Representatives of Georgia have admitted to the Human Rights Watch (HRW) that Tbilisi had used cluster bombs in South Ossetia, AFP cites HRW representative Bonnie Docherty. Earlier, accusations of the use of the cluster bombs had been used against Russia and were refuted by Russian General Staff.
A cluster bomb consists of a few dozens of smaller subminitions that are dispersed before detonation, to ensure coverage of the widest area possible. Part of the bomblets detonate at the cluster bomb's initial use. The rest of them remain on the surface as landmines. Children are consequently the most common victims of these landmines. Munitions of the sort were used in Iraq, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Lebanon.
