45.4% of Ukrainians think that, for the sake of good-neighborly relations with Russia, Ukraine must avoid joining NATO, REGNUM correspondent in Kiev cites Director of the Institute for Strategic Studies Yury Ruban to say at a press conference Sep 1.

According to Ruban, ''33.6% of the respondents spoke against this, and 21% found it diffucult to respond.'' ''The society has already realized that Ukraine, as for today, is not capable of defending its independence and territorial integrity on its own. However, the majority of Ukrainians are not yet ready to answer unequivocally, what option of guaranteeing security is to be chosen,'' Ruban commented.

The poll was conducted by the Institute for Strategic Studies on Aug 21-26. 2011 respondents 18 years old and older from all the Ukraine's regions took part in it.
