Lithuanian prime minister: New governing coalition in Lithuanian parliament won't be stable

Chairman of the Social Democrats, the head of the Government of Lithuania Gediminas Kirkilas believes that the “second place in the elections to the Seim is a good result”. According to a REGNUM correspondent, Kirkilas announced this today on October 27, during his press conference. “Our party will meet tomorrow to evaluate the results,” he said.

The situation in the country, according to Kirkilas, is “relatively good” despite statements of some experts on the serious crisis and a possible recession in the economy. However, the current parliament does not have time for the adoption of the budget. The budget, believes Kirkilas, will be taken on by next Seimas. The premier expressed concern that the new parliament could encroach on the cost of social sectors to reduce the budget deficit. “I can't see any other real account to spare,” the premier said.

Gediminas Kirkilas is skeptical about a new governing coalition of the Conservatives, “The Party of National Revival”, the Liberals and the liberal-center. “This coalition is fragile and very soon their views on many issues will divide,” he said. He also explained why in his opinion the Social Democrats didn't get a majority during elections to the Seimas. According to Kirkilas, the problem is in the lack of campaigning and publicity of things that were done well. Because of this people haven't heard about developments in important areas. “We have to strengthen this issue to avoid such situation in the future,” the PM said. Despite of this the Kirkilas Government was already nicknamed “the Government of braggadocio” because of the repeating praising themselves.

The premier also said that even while his faction is working in the opposition, they “won't make rows or create commissions to carry out continuous investigations”. “We shall work positively, we'll be strong but effective opposition,” Kirkilas said. He noted that during the last Seimas convocation numerous laws and decisions were taken by politicians just in order to settle scores with each other. “Just look how many papers were wasted,” the head of the government wondered.

It should be recalled that during the two ballots on October 12 and 26 the new Seimas was elected in Lithuania. According to preliminary data, the new Lithuanian parliament consists of the party “Fatherland Union” — Christian Democrats — 44 seats, the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania — 26 mandates, the party “Order and justice” — 16 seats, “Party of National Revival” — 15 seats, “Sajudis liberals” — 11 mandates, a coalition of the Working Party and youth — 10 seats, Liberals and centrists — 8 seats and 4 mandates for independent candidates. Three representatives from the Electoral Action of Poles, three peasant-populist and one representative of the New Alliance also take seats in Lithuanian Seimas.
