Latvia did not support Georgia’s initiative to move Olympics from Sochi
Political differences should not hamper both sports and culture and decision concerned the venue for the Olympics is in the competence of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a REGNUM correspondent was informed at the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia today on November, 26. Besides, according to spokeswoman for the ministry, Diana Eglite, Latvia's ambassador in Moscow, Andris Teykmanis said today to journalists that Latvia in spite of Georgian calls would take part at Olympics 2014 in Sochi.
Earlier, on November, 25, the Sports and Youth Issues Committee of the Georgian Parliament sent a letter to the Latvian Saeima subcommittee on Sports where the Georgian side called Latvian parliamentarians to back the idea of lifting the decisions to hold the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in the Russian city of Sochi for political reasons. Georgia also applied to the International Olympic Committee to move Winter Olympics 2014 from Sochi for security reasons.
