Chechnya: Bodyguards of Shamil Basayev Intend to Surrender to Law Enforcement Bodies

The number of members of illegal band formations, who intend to surrender, is rising. As they reported to the REGNUM News Agency in the regional operative headquarters for management of anti-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus, Banar Yuntsev, born in 1972, gave himself up to law enforcers. He testified that he had been a member of illegal armed formations, led by the so called director of the national security service Turpal-Ali Atgereyev since December 1994. As a measure of punishment till the end of the check-up B.Yuntsev was given an order not to leave the place.

A so called middle man came to law enforcement bodies of the Nozhay-Yurtovsky district. He reported that he represented interests of two former militants of an illegal band formation, which in 2000 were in the personal security of Shamil Basayev. They are willing to undergo a procedure of amnesty and want to know conditions and guarantees of their personal safety. In major, it is connected with the possibility if revenge acts from the side of Basayev’s illegal armed formations. Negotiations are being under way.

In the course of operative search measures in the village of Alkhan-Kala of the Grozny district, law enforcers detained Adman Saydulayev, born in 1977, who had been wanted for crimes committed according to Article 205 of the RF Criminal Code (Terrorism). Till the prosecution Sandulayev will be kept in the cell of temporal detention.

Officials of law enforcement bodies in the Leninsky district of Grozny city detained Vakha Aziyev, born in 1957. He has been in the federal search since 1990 for crimes envisaged by Article 206, p. 2 (Hostage Taking). At present the criminal is under arrest. The investigation is under way.

Federal forces and law enforcement bodies continue to work on confiscation of weaponry out of illegal turnover. Law enforcers found a cache in a ruined house, located on the Koltsov Staropromislovsky Street in Grozny. The cache contained weaponry of different types. Information about the location of the cache was given by the detained member of an illegal formation, led by Payzulayev. Weaponry and explosives were taken to a safe place and annihilated.

As a result of a usual checkup in the Itum-Kalinsky district, detachment of federal forces found a cache near the Verkhniye Tazbichi village. All the found weaponry were destroyed on the spot. A financial reward was given to persons who the where the cache was located.

Law enforcement bodies and federal military forces are conducting measures to detain persons, who had equipped the cache.

Thanks to information, given by a shuttle driver, law enforcers of the Leninsky district in the city if Grozny managed to prevent an act of terrorism. The driver told to policemen that he had seen a carton box near the road slightly covered with ground. Having approached the box, he saw wires going away in the direction of ruins nearby. Sappers, who came to the place, found an explosive device, consisting of a 122 mm missile. The self made explosive device was presently annihilated.

During the conduct of an engineering reconnaissance on the road, going from the Tzentoroy village of the Nozhay-Yurtovsky district to the Ersenoy village of the Vedeno district, detachments of federal military forces found a self made explosive device, made of two 152 mm fougasses buried 15 meters away from each other. Taking into consideration that the road was not used by federal forces, it can be assumed that the terror act had been planned for republican authorities or local bodies of power.
