The level of corruption in Armenia was assessed at 2.9 points (in 2003 it was 3 points, in 2004 – 3.1). The data was submitted by the Transparency International organization. As Head of Transparency International Office in Armenia Amalia Kostanyan said at a news conference on Monday, the situation is assessed at a 10-points scale, and the less he number of points is, the higher is the corruption level.

According to Kostanyan, the organization carried out a poll in Armenia, the results of which say that a substantial part of the respondents (62.9%) believes that in three past years the level of corruption in the country has increased.

4.5% say the level of corruption has lowered, 17.1% could not answer the question, and 15.5% assume the situation has not changed.

Amalia Kostanyan stressed that the level of corruption cannot be reduced by adopting laws. “The problem can be resolved only by a political will,” she said, adding that to decrease corruption it very important that government and other agencies undertake appropriate measures.
