Oil extraction launched from West Azeri oil platform
Oil extraction has been launched from the West Azeri oil platform (Azerbaijan). As REGNUM was told in Azerbaijani International Operative Company, the oil is extracted from the second section of the Azeri Project, a part of Azeri-Chirag-Gyuneshli oilfields in the Azerbaijani section of the Caspian Sea.
Oil extraction at the West Azeri oilfield, which is 100 km east from Baku, at a depth of 118 meters, started on December 30, and on January 4 the oil reached the Sangachal terminal through the underwater pipeline. The amount of oil extracted will grow as soon as other oil wells start operating in 2006. New boring will be started from the platform this year. The highest amount of the oil extracted at West Azeri will be 300,000 barrels of oil per day. Daily extraction of oil at Central Azeri totals 340,000 barrels.
Head of BP Office in Azerbaijan David Woodworth announced that the event means consequent fulfillment of the obligation due to be finished in 2008. West Azeri will play an important role in impetuous increase of amount of oil in Azeri-Chirag-Gyuneshli, which will be pumped into the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan export pipeline after it starts functioning fully this spring.
