Kakha Bendukidze can suffer from explosions on gas pipelines in North Ossetia
Speaker of the Georgian parliament Nino Burjanadze rules out a possibility of selling the main gas pipeline to Gazprom. She made the statement at a session of the parliament’s bureau during which they discussed the situation after explosions on gas pipelines.
The Democratic Front opposing faction considers the explosions as another proof that Russia is an unreliable ally, and urged to raise the question of impeachment of Minister for Economic Reforms Kakha Bendukidze.
The minister supports selling of the main gas pipeline to Russia, as it is fully in Russia’s hands. But the US is against it, because it is lobbying the Baku-Erzurum gas pipeline, which is under construction now. In case the pipeline is in Russia’s hands, it can be easily prolonged to Turkey, which will put under question competitiveness of Baku-Erzurum pipeline. Bendukidze, however, believes that these issues should not bother Georgia, as its interests will not suffer from selling the pipeline, reports Georgia Online. Nino Burjanadze said she knows the president’s stance on the issue, who is not going to pose the question of selling the strategic gas pipeline. At the same time, the parliamentary speaker advised the opposition to be more correct in questions of strategic national interests.
