Latvian president to use Olympics for informal contacts
To encourage Latvian athletes personally, Latvian President Vira Vike-Freiberga has departed for Torino (Italy), where Winter Olympic Games 2006 are to open tonight.
According to the Latvian Radio, the Latvian leader will stay in Torino till February 16, and informal meetings with leaders and delegations of other countries are not ruled out.
According to REGNUM information, Latvia is represented at the Olympics by a delegation of 97 persons, 57 of them are athletes. The athletes represent seven winter sports, including the ice hockey team of 23 players. The Latvian flag at the open ceremony will be carried by goalkeepers of the hockey team with 10 year record in the NHL Artur Irbe.
