Iran expressed protest by publication of Prophet Mohamed cartoons in Lithuania
The Lithuanian foreign ministry has received a protest note from Iran concerning publication of Prophet Mohamed cartoons in the Lithuanian Respublika newspaper, a REGNUM correspondent was told by press office of the Lithuanian foreign ministry.
The note states that the cartoons published in some European newspapers and republished by Respublika on February 8, provoked discontent by Islam supporters in the whole world. Besides, the note says, Muslims of the world proceed from generous Islam values, respect to all prophets and holies of all religions. It is also said that freedom of the press cannot be used as a reason for infringing other religious beliefs, so all Muslims of the world, personally or in groups, express their protest against such actions.
The Lithuanian foreign ministry says it respects religious beliefs on any person, however, does not prove any actions aimed at putting limits to freedom of the press, so it rejected accusations presented to Lithuania.
On February 9, a meeting of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry and State Security Department officials was held to discuss measures to provide for security of Lithuanian citizens in the country and abroad.
