Georgian parliament to consider governmental decision on introducing emergency situation in Ajaria
A plenary session of the Georgian parliament is to consider a governmental decision on introducing emergency situation in Khelvachauri District in the Ajarian Republic because of the threat of bird flu H5N1 strain spreading. As a REGNUM correspondent was told in the parliament’s press office, the decision was approved by the Georgian Parliamentary Bureau, at a meeting of which Speaker Nino Burjanadze announced that at present stage the situation in the district needs extraordinary measures that the government has started to undertake, and noted that in case of such a threat appearing in other regions, the Georgian parliament will have to think over special legislation on the procedure of making such decisions.
Recently, near the village of Adlia eleven dead swans have been found, and the examination of which confirmed H5N1 strain by one of the birds. After it the Georgian authorities have started undertaking measures to prevent bird flu from spreading. In particular, all the poultry was annihilated within a radius of 3 km from the site where bird flu was detected, special disinfection carpets were put on the roads for local residents, hunting rifles are being seized to prevent from fowling, a ban for selling live poultry and fowling was imposed in Georgia.
