President of Poland interested in spelling of Polish surnames in Lithuania
On March 14, President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus discussed with his Polish counterpart Lech Kaczynski strengthening of bilateral cooperation, as a REGNUM correspondent has been informed in press office of the Lithuanian president. According to Adamkus, first visit of Kaczynski is an optimistic and positive start for cooperation.
Participants of the meeting noted that Latvia and Poland, using their membership in EU and NATO, can together have a powerful voice in the international community. Kaczynski promised that he would do his utmost to keep relations between Poland and Lithuania as high, as they had never been.
During discussion of power engineering questions, Adamkus proposed Poland to join the Baltic countries in construction of a new nuclear power plant, and stressed that energy independence is a guarantee of our political independence. Kaczynski in his turn noted that this is one of principal problems in bilateral relations, and after settlement of it, the sides can start creation of a new block.
The presidents discussed relations of their countries with adjacent countries. They stated their position to be notable and audible in international community, defend main principles of democracy. Discussing the situation in Byelorussia, they agreed that Byelorussia is far from democracy, and its development will be far clearer after the elections.
In the end, the president of Poland displayed interest in spelling of Polish surnames in Lithuania. Adamkus said, that the Lithuanian Seym would soon decide on this question.
