Ukrainian expert: Byelorussian society is not ready to change of power
Head of Ukrainian Institute of Global Strategy, political expert Vadim Karasyov thinks, that opposition to Alexander Lukashenko prepared well for the Byelorussian presidential elections, but Byelorussian society is not ready to change of power, as he told in an interview to a REGNUM correspondent, commenting on the results of the elections.
According to Karasyov, technically, the Byelorussian opposition prepared well for the elections. It demonstrated access to the media, received branding ads in western mass media and support from European NGOs. Right before the elections the opposition conducted several mass events that demonstrated real potential of mass mobilization. But in the same time, Byelorussian society, peasantry, bureaucrats are not ready to dismiss Lukashenko and change the government, and this part of the society de facto created the results of elections. They even may be ready to resignation of Lukashenko, but not ready to Milinkevich, or other pro-Western politician. The expert thinks that Lukashenko will make his regime less and less strict, because economic development demands it, so at the next parliamentary elections the opposition will have more chances.
