Lithuanian foreign ministry called upon establishment of free civil society in Byelorussia
On March 20, the Lithuanian foreign ministry issued a statement, where it expressed Lithuania’s concern with oppressed atmosphere at the Byelorussian presidential election, where freedom of press and equal rights for all candidates have not been guaranteed. Such elections cannot be called free and democratic, says the statement, informs a REGNUM correspondent.
The statement also says that OSCE observers found Byelorussian presidential elections non-democratic because of the violations. We do not understand the CIS statement that the elections corresponded with the current Byelorussian legislation, and thus were legitimate, thinks the Latvian foreign ministry. The ministry also expressed support to citizens of Byelorussia, who try to defend democratic development in peaceful ways, says the statement.
We invite the international community to join us in establishment of free civil society in Byelorussia, concludes the statement.
