Latvian Foreign Ministry appealed to Byelorussia to abstain from repressions
The Latvian Foreign Ministry expressed its regret for the fact, that March 19 presidential elections in Byelorussia did not correspond with international norms of democratic elections, reports a REGNUM correspondent. It is said in a report for mass media, which was published by press office of the Foreign Ministry on March 21. It is stressed at the ministry, that international observers, including OSCE representatives, came to such conclusion too. According to this information, during the election campaign and elections themselves the Byelorussian authorities acted to restrict possibilities of democratic choice for citizens of that country. The Latvian Foreign Ministry believes, that a break in connection with understanding of democratic values happened in consciousness of part of Byelorussian civil society and this part of society demonstrates its civil position, protesting peacefully, is said in the press release. The Foreign Ministry appeals to Byelorussian authorities to take into consideration opinion of this part of society and to abstain from power use against peaceful marchers and participants of meetings, as well as from repressive actions against opposition leaders.
