Ukrainian parliamentary speaker: Yushchenko made politicians determine country’s policy and this is his merit

Read it in Russian

“On August 4, there was a transition from the presidential to parliamentary-presidential form of governance. Ukraine has come closer to the European model of governance in its form, as putting it into practice is a long a difficult task. In this direction, we shall have to do a lot, however, it is important that the transition to these changes was done in an open and democratic way,” leader of the Ukrainian Socialist Party and Speaker of the Ukrainian Supreme Rada Alexander Moroz says in his official address.

The statement, released ion August 9, says that the last elections “were won by nobody; political forces that supported Viktor Yanukovich received much less votes than in 2004. In the same way, the forces that supported Viktor Yushchenko lost the elections too, and their ‘orange’ part split up, quarreled as early as in a September scandal receiving, probably, redistribution of votes in favor of Yulia Timoshenko,” a REGNUM correspondent reports. Alexander Moroz is sure that in their essence the Regions Party as well as BYT and Our Ukraine are similar in their origin, intentions and membership. So, for the electorate not to notice this identity, they used argument like the “language issue,” separatism, nationalism and NATO. The issues that are not of top priority, but suit very well for dividing into camps under the principle “we and they.” Such campaigning has brought about if not to a split in Ukraine, then at least it caused a significant breach in its integrity.

So, the parliamentary speaker believes that in the current situation, Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko “has made practically impossible of the situation, he made politicians of different colors make up their minds on key issues in domestic and foreign policy. Nobody had managed to do this before that. Some people should not speak disrespectfully about the Universal. Time will show that its guidelines will lay the basis for Ukraine’s development, in activities of current and future power. At the same time, signing the Universal will put an end to speculative and mostly harmful for society discussions on language, church, federalism etc.”

It is worth mentioning, on August 4, after signing the National Unity Universal, President Viktor Yushchenko introduced candidature of Viktor Yanukovich for prime minister’s post. It allowed forming the new government of representatives of Our Ukraine, the Regions Party, Socialist and Communist Parties.
