European observers: If EU countries do not recognize referendum in Transdnestr, they do not recognize democracy
On September 16, member of a united group of observers from France, Italy and Belgium Stefano Vernole (Eurasia Journal) has spoken at a news conference at the International Press Center, a REGNUM correspondent reports. As the expert stresses, he is generally interested in the situation in Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Transdnestr.
Information on Transdnestr spread in Italy is rather intricate, preconceived and biased. Upon arriving to Transdnestr, I was made sure that streets of its capital are safe; there is a stable economic situation. Events concerning the referendum do really stir interest in the whole Europe, Stefano Vernole explains what made him visit the country. Besides, Stefano Vernole expresses confidence that the referendum will take place and the voting process will be held at a high level, in accordance with democratic principles. If the EU countries do not recognize the referendum, they do not recognize democracy.
Stefano Vernole believes: Coordination on the Transdnestr issue could have encouraged a common space in the territories of the EU member-countries and the Russian Federation, from Reykjavik to Vladivostok.
