Journalist becomes victim in Russia, Iraq, and Algeria
Next journal’s issue of the authoritative Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) will be published in November. Anna Politkovskaya will be called there one of leading fighters for freedom of press for last twenty five years in the world. According to the committee’s calculations, twelve assassinations of journalists, all of which stayed unrevealed, took place in Russia, since Vladimir Putin came to power. Russia takes the third place concerning journalists’ assassinations after Iraq and Algeria, CNN informs citing the Associated Press. Analyzing date for last 15 years, the CPJ (with its headquarters in New York) informed that overall 42 journalists had died in Russia since 1992.
Anna Politkovskaya’s murder stirred many commentaries in the USA. Politkovskaya was, as many newspapers stressed there, a US citizen because she was born in 1958 in family of Soviet diplomats in New York. Meanwhile, image of poster, on which portraits of the brightest representatives of Russian liberal intelligentsia was placed, appeared in Russian part of Internet. Lyudmila Alexeyeva and Anatoly Chubais, Yulia Latynina and Egor Gaydar adjoin here. The poster is provided with threatening inscription. Anna Politkovskaya’s photograph has been cynically crossed. There are no less then six journalists on the poster, as well as image of a sight.
It is worth reminding; Prosecutor General of Russia Yuri Chaika took investigation of proceedings, brought on charge of murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya, under his personal control. Speaking by phone to US President, Vladimir Putin stressed; Russian law enforcement institutions would do their utmost to objectively investigate the journalist’s tragic death.
