Latvian parliamentary elections: Misrepresentations found at a polling station
Public prosecutor’s office of Balva district brought criminal proceedings in connection with possible falsification of election documents in Kubul volost (Sub-district) of the Balva district during voting to the ninth Latvian Saema (parliament) on October 7, 2006.
On October 9, one of the polling station’s employees was quoted by Latvian First TV-Channel as informing that one of election committees’ members entered names of five persons, who had not voted, into lists of voted persons. According to public prosecutor Zinaida Panchenko, there are suspicions that the female commission’s member might have entered much more names.
In his turn, Latvian Central Election Committee Chairman Arnis Cimdars commented to the TV-Channel that the case in Kubul volost would not influence upon general outcomes of Saema elections. Meanwhile, the CEC does not know, whether voting papers under other’s names have been thrown into ballot-box, as well as in favor of what party the votes might be misrepresented. According to preliminary outcomes, Trēvzemei un Brīivībai (For Fatherland and Freedom)/LNNK (Movement for Latvian national independence) Union received majority of votes in Kubul volost; as a result of voting, the union will receive eight seats at the future Saema.
