UNESCO calls to punish murderers of journalist Anna Politkovskaya
On October 10, the UNESCO Director General Ko¿chiro Matsuura called on Russian authorities to punish executers and customers of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya’s murder.
The UNESCO head expressed his assurance that the murder’s investigation will be fruitful and guilty persons will appear in court, Mayak Radio informs.
It is stressed in the UNESCO head’s statement that the journalist’s death means a great loss to her profession, to her country and to international community as a whole. Through her articles in Novaya Gazeta, Politkovskaya defended freedom of expression in Russia, a freedom that is fundamental human right and a cornerstone of democracy, Matsuura pointed out then.
As REGNUM informed earlier, observer of Novaya Gazeta newspaper Anna Politkovskaya was found shot dead on October 7 in a lift in her Moscow block of flats. The incident’s conditions prove that the murder was ordered in advance. Russian General Prosecutor Yuri Chaika took investigation of Politkovskaya’s murder under his personal control.
