Peacekeepers’ joint checkpoint Kekhvi was fired at Oct 10 19:00 Moscow time from automatic weapons. The fire was directed from the Georgian village of Kemerti 1.5 kilometer north of the Kekhvi village (the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone — REGNUM), REGNUM correspondent reports quoting Assistant Commander of the Joint Peacekeeping Force (JPF) in the Georgian- South Ossetian conflict zone for media relations Vladimir Ivanov.

Ivanov accounted that no response fire was opened. No casualties or destruction were detected. JPF motorized rifle battalion reinforcement group who arrived at 19:25 and checked probable firing points did not find assailants.

Vladimir Ivanov says this is not the first case of an attack against JPF peacekeepers’ checkpoints in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone. “The united headquarters of the JPF warns that if peacekeepers’ checkpoints are fired at again, the JPF personnel will open return fire, which is provided for by the existing mandate,” Ivanov announced.
