Read it in Russian

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan welcomes adoption of UNSC resolution on Georgia proposed by Russia. Adopting this resolution will facilitate maintaining peace and stability in the conflict zone, Annan says in a statement publicized by his press secretary. Annan emphasizes that the UNSC decision on extending Russia’s peacekeeping mandate in Abkhazia was approved unanimously.

October 13, the UNSC unanimously adopted the proposed by Russia resolution on Georgia. It is stressed in the document that the escalation of tensions between Georgia and Abkhazia was a result of Tbilisi special operation in the upper Kodori gorge performed July 2006. The UNSC calls Georgia to withdraw troops from the upper Kodori Gorge and abstain from bellicose rhetoric and provocational action. The UNSC also extends up to April 2007 mandate of the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG). Resolution envisions the demand to extend mandate of Russian peacekeepers in Abkhazia for the same term and perform joint with the UNOMIG patrolling of the Kodori Gorge.
