Transdnestr celebrated October 14 the 214th anniversary of foundation of Tiraspol. The holiday began from the ceremony of lifting flags of the city and the republic before the state administration building.

Tiraspol mayor Viktor Kostyrko, head of Tiraspol municipal council Alexander Sherba, deputy head of the municipal administration Maria Jorzheva, and representatives of all ministries, state agencies, and administrations, political parties, non-governmental and youth organizations of Tiraspol attended the event, REGNUM correspondent reports.

Head of Tiraspol state administration Viktor Kostyrko said while speaking to the public: “I congratulate all the people of Tiraspol with the holiday and would like to thank all the enterprises and organizations, as well as their employees, who have made and who do everything for this city to prosper, become even more beautiful, and for our republic to become even more rich! The pride of Tiraspol, its 'golden resource' are, first of all, the people, the working people, soldiers, who in 1941- not by coercion but because their heart told them to — rose to defend their native land; those who in the post-war years recreated Tiraspol; those who bring fame to our city in the sport arenas. In 1992, the people of Tiraspol took arms to defend the freedom and independence of Transdnestr. Today we are going through an important stage in the life of TMR — the stage of recognition. The referendum of September 17, 2006 has shown what the people want — sovereignty, recognition, and union with Russia. This is the will of the people, and it is sacred!”

After the flags were lifted, all the attendants headed by the Tiraspol mayor Viktor Kostyrko lay flowers to the Memorial of Glory. A motorcade that moved along the city streets carried flags of Transdnestr Moldavian Republic, the Russian Federation, and the Proryv Movement. Young people chanted slogans “Tiraspol-TMR-Proryv,” “Smirnov-Russia-TMR,” “Long live Suvorov's glory, long live Russia!”

Leader of the Proryv International Youth Corporation Alena Arshinova emphasized in an interview to REGNUM correspondent: “Tiraspol is our city, our republic, and it is us who is to decide, how we are to live from now on. We are sure that the capital of Transdnestr Tiraspol very soon will take an honorable place among the capitals of the recognized states of the world.”

REGNUM reference: 214 years ago, a fortress Sredinnaya was founded on the left bank of the Dnestr (Dniester) River on a special order of Alexander Suvorov. A city of Tiraspol was founded by the fortress. At that time, about 2.5 thousand people lived in it. In 1806, Tiraspol became an Uezd town of the Kherson Province. According to historical accounts, Odessa, Ovidiopol, and Balta were subordinate to it. The toponym consists of two words: Tiras — the ancient Greek name for the Dnestr River, and polis, i.e., a city. Tiraspol developed as a trade and industrial center of large vicinity. The river has played an important role in its economy. Products of craftsmanship and agricultural produce were transported by Dnestr in flat-bottom boats and rafts. Today, Tiraspol is a large industrial city. It has a developed light and food industry and electrical engineering.
