Resolution on Georgia: most problems remain Kokoshin
The head of the State Duma Committee on the CIS and Compatriots Abroad Andrei Kokoshin regards the UNSC resolution on the situation in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone adopted Oct 13 as a positive event, both for the situation in the Caucasus and the world community in general. It should not, however, be overestimated, Kokoshin said to REGNUM correspondent Oct 14.
The resolution is one of the ways to bring to their senses the current Georgia’s authorities who obviously were whipping up tensions, Kokoshin reasons. They have long since broken agreements and passed all the limits, and the reaction of the UNSC on the Russian initiative was absolutely just.
The parliamentarian says he hopes that the resolution will aid maintaining stability in the Caucasus region, of which an important element is the Russian peacekeeping contingent.
However, the meaning of the resolution should not be overestimated. We see in it the consistently destructive action against the South Ossetia, the statements on the negotiation format on South Ossetia. This is why, although it is an important step forward, a lot of problems still remain that must be solved, Kokoshin emphasized.
