US Assistant Secretary of State: Kosovo is unique case, all parallels are historically wrong here
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili received US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried, who paid an official visit to Tbilisi. After the meeting was over, the US Diplomat stated at final briefing that the USA does not recognize independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as outcomes of referendums conducted there. No referendum may change approach to Georgia’s territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders, Fried stressed. Such referendum was conducted by Transdnestr, too; however, nobody recognized it. Recently, the UN Security Council confirmed support of principle of Georgia’s territorial integrity within its borders, recognized by international community. Also, the Washington representative stressed that it was historically wrong to draw parallels between Abkhazia and South Ossetia on the one hand and Kosovo on the other hand and that Kosovo my not be held up as an example because it is a unique case.
