USA tells South Ossetia not to hold referendum and return into Georgia
The US State Department issued an official statement on November 9 speaking against South Ossetia conducting a referendum on independence. According to US Spokesman Sean McCormack, Tskhinvali’s actions will only serve to exacerbate tensions and divert attention from the need to peacefully resolve the conflict. We call on Tskhinvali and Tbilisi to engage in direct talks to find a peaceful solution that defines the status of South Ossetia within Georgia's internationally recognized borders, while affording South Ossetia significant autonomy within a unified Georgia, the spokesman added.
It is worth reminding, the referendum on independence as well as presidential election will be held in South Ossetia on November 12.
