Georgia: Moscow stands behind Tskhinvali’s separatist wishes
The USA condemned decision of South Ossetian leadership to conduct a referendum on independence. As REGNUM informed earlier, according to US Spokesman Sean McCormack, Tskhinvali’s actions will only serve to exacerbate tensions and divert attention from the need to peacefully resolve the conflict. We call on Tskhinvali and Tbilisi to engage in direct talks to find a peaceful solution that defines the status of South Ossetia within Georgia's internationally recognized borders, while affording South Ossetia significant autonomy within a unified Georgia, the spokesman added.
As for Georgia, its leadership maintains that Moscow stands behind the separatist wishes of Sokhumi and Tskhinvali. Georgian Foreign Minister Gela Bezhuashvili stated recently that Russia manipulates the republics in order to undermine Tbilisi’s centralized governing, GZT stresses.
Tskhinvali authorities are going to conduct referendum on South Ossetia’s independence and presidential elections on November 12. Regional residents should respond to question: Do you agree with preserving by South Ossetia its current status of independent state and its recognition by international community?
