South Ossetian authorities expect provocations on election day

Nearly 55,000 people who received passports of South Ossetian citizens may come to polling stations on November 12.

On November 11, any campaigning in favor of candidates is prohibited. Observers point to “low-scaled election campaigns” of all four official presidential contenders. Nearly the whole campaign was being carried out recently in South Ossetia concerned its residents’ participation in the elections. According to the head of the unrecognized republic Eduard Kokoity, power structures are ready to suppress any provocations, as well as to prevent from derailment of the elections and the referendum. “We expect provocations. They are carried out every day: minor gunfights with the Georgian side, sending commandos into the South Ossetian territory. We are ready for any turn of events. South Ossetia’s law-enforcement troops are able to fulfill any task in order to prevent from derailment of the referendum and presidential election,” Eduard Kokoity is quoted as saying by Mayak Radio.
