NATO, EU, and US against referendum in South Ossetia
Overwhelming majority of voters in the referendum on national independence and presidential election held in South Ossetia Nov 12 voted for independence and the acting president Eduard Kokoity. According to exit polls conducted near voting stations, 99% of the voters approve independence and 98% Kokoity.
According to republican CEC, voter turnout in the ballot stations made about 95%. Internal ministry did not register any legal offenses during the vote.
Representatives of 11 countries observed the votes: Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Germany, Austria, Spain, Venezuela, Jordan, and unrecognized republics of Abkhazia, Transdnestr, and Nagorno Karabakh.
NATO has condemned holding the referendum on independence of the former Georgian autonomy, arguing that it would increase tensions in the region. Opposing also are the EU who claimed that it is not going to recognize future results of the vote and the administration of the US president.
