Council of Europe does not recognize independence referendum in South Ossetia
The referendum was unnecessary, unhelpful and unfair, a statement made by Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis released today by the Council of Europe press office says. The circumstances in which it has been carried out, especially the fact that ethnic Georgians were not given the right to vote, makes it irrelevant, the secretary general said stressing that outcomes of the voting cannot be even taken into account. Besides, as Davis pointed it out, the outcomes of the voting held by the Tskhinvali authorities will not be recognized by the international community, and the voting by itself was in no way contributing to the search of political settlement of the South Ossetian conflict.
