Abkhazian FM: Armament of Georgia may lead to explosion in the South Caucasus
The course of the political settlement of the Abkhazian-Georgian conflict was the key topic of the meeting of Abkhazian Foreign Minister Sergey Shamba and the acting head of the Division for Europe and Latin America of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations David Harlan that took place in Sukhumi on Nov 16.
A REGNUM correspondent from Sukhumi reports that Harlan asked Shamba about Abkhazia’s position on the peace process, its near plans and its attitude towards the current stage of the economic and military development of Georgia.
Shamba told Harlan about the Abkhazian-Georgian peace process, highlighting the activities of the UN Mission in Abkhazia. He said that today the UN should, first of all, force Georgia to observe the earlier agreements. There is no sense in making further agreements if the earlier agreements are not fulfilled, Shamba said. He noted that the Abkhazian authorities cannot but be worried about the growing military strength of Georgia and are taking appropriate measures. Shamba noted that the armament of Georgia may lead to an explosion in the South Caucasus, which is by no means good for the region’s countries.
