Radioactive traces of Litvinenko’s poisoning lead to Turkey
Boeing 767 aircrafts belonging to British Airways, on board of which traces of insignificant radioactive contamination were found, have flied to Turkey three times this month. Three Boeing 767 planes were detected by the British government as being related to the investigation of Russian ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko, in whose body traces of radioactive polonium 210 substance were found. Radioactive contamination was found in two of the three jets.
Russian security forces have no information on involvement of Alexander Litvinenko in smuggling radioactive materials. Special representative of the Russian president on fighting terrorism Anatoly Safonov said: It is not a secret that we and partners from the United States and Europe have been investigating several facts of illegal trafficking of radioactive materials. But those were facts of other period and other contents. A statement on possible involvement of Alexander Litvinenko in trafficking of radioactive substances from Russia was made by Italian Mario Scaramella while he was talking to British investigators. Scaramella had a meeting with Litvinenko in London shortly before the ex-spy’s death.
However, Russia has already denied any possibility of unsanctioned access to polonium 210, the isotope which supposedly killed Litvinenko, RSN reports.
Yesterday, British Airways spokespersons announced that traces of radioactive contamination were found on board of two aircrafts. Check-ups of the jets were held in the frameworks of the investigation of Litvinenko’s death. The planes carried out flights to Ataturk International Airport (Istanbul, Turkey) from Heathrow Airport (London, UK) on October 27, November 2 and 3. Turkish authorities intend to conduct medical examinations of British Airways passengers in order to find whether they were subjected to radiation, CNN-Turk.
