Zatulin: Ukraine’s position should be taken into account in Transdnestr

Read it in Russian

Russian State Duma MP, Director of the Institute for CIS Countries Konstantin Zatulin explained at a news conference in Tiraspol on December 10 how the situation in Transdnestr differs from South Ossetia and Abkhazia, a REGNUM correspondent informs. According to Zatulin, “if we recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Georgia will hardly decide to attack them apprehending Russia that does not need a war in its border. Transdnestr does not have a common border with Russia. So here we should be guided by the principle of lesser harm and take into account Ukraine’s position. Recently, the situation has changed for the better, Tarasyuk (Ukraine’s foreign minister — REGNUM) is leaving his post. But anyway we should be very careful.” Besides, answering a question on how Russia’s position on Transdnestr correlates with the ban on Moldovan wine imports, Zatulin said that “we can trade and not trade wine with Moldova, but we do not trade with Transdnestr.”
