Foreign ministry: Ukraine does not recognize election in Transdnestr
Ukraine announced it did not recognize the so-called presidential election in Transdnestr held on December 10, an official comment of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry released on December 11 says. Ukraine joined international community that declared the election and the outcomes illegitimate and did not recognize them, the statement by the foreign ministry says.
The international community is guided by the fact that both presidential election and the referendum held in September contradict to the international norms and standards, UN and OSCE principles, so they are illegitimate; they do not encourage settlement of the Transdnestr conflict in general. Ukraine stressed once again necessity of solving the Transdnestr issue by a political way being guided by observance of territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova, the statement says. In this connection, Ukraine calls for soonest recommencement of talks in the 5+2 format (Moldova and Transdnestr as the parties; Ukraine, Russia and OSCE as mediators, the EU and the USA as observers) initiated by the Ukrainian plan for Transdnestr settlement proposed by President Viktor Yushchenko.
