Russia supports new UN SC draft resolution on Iranian nuclear program

Read it in Russian

The draft resolution on Iran elaborated by the European Three (France, Germany, Great Britain) is based on the proposals introduced by Russia from the very beginning of work on the document, Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov is quoted as saying by Golos Rossii Radio.

Earlier, the UN Security Council started official consideration of the final draft resolution. The concept is based on necessity to press Iran to make it seat to the negotiation table, to press on the directions that stir concern of the IAEA. The new draft resolution envisages putting limits on delivery to Iran of technologies and materials involved in uranium enrichment, chemical processing of the exposed fuel and establishment the energy reactor on heavy water, as well as any other activities that can be related to produce of nuclear weapons carriers. The draft contains a list of measures to prevent from delivery of technologies related to issues of IAEA concern. It is noteworthy, any mentioning of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant which is constructed in Iran with Russia’s assistance was excluded from the text of the draft resolution, on what Moscow insisted, saying the project is carried out in accordance with regulations and under control of the IAEA.

Meanwhile, as one of the draft resolution co-authors German UN Ambassador Thomas Matussek told reporters, the resolution does not close the door to the talks. “We do not want to punish Tehran, but to inspire it to actions that can restore international trust in it,” he said noting that the new draft resolution is aimed at taking Tehran back to the negotiation process on non-proliferation. As soon as Iran gives up the process of uranium enrichment and processing of nuclear fuel so painfully taken by international community, the proposed sanctions will be immediately suspended, UK Ambassador to UN Jones Perry said. From its turn, France’s Ambassador to UN Jean-Marc de La Sabliere expressed hope for soonest agreement of the UN Security Council on the draft resolution to adopt it before Christmas.
