Scotland Yard: Scaramella’s arrest is in no way connected to Litvinenko’s murder
Scotland Yard assures that arrest of Mario Scaramella in Italy was in no way connected to the case of murder of ex-KGB officer Alexander Litvinenko. It is connected with Italian authorities, the British police say.
Scaramella was arrested in Naples after he returned from London, where he was undergoing medical examination and treatment of radioactivity. As RSN notes, the arrest was carried out in the framework of investigation of possible disclosure of the state secret and on suspicion of arms trafficking. In Italy, criminal proceedings on several charges were instituted against Scaramella, but the arrest is most probably connected with a story in the beginning of 2006. Scaramella announced then that an attempt at him and several rightist politicians was being prepared that is to be committed by Ukrainian citizens, and arms were to be delivered from Northern Italy. HHowever, investigators suspected that the arms were placed stealthily by Scaramella himself.
Scaramella met Litvinenko in London on November 1. By the end of the day Litvinenko suddenly felt ill, and in three weeks he died of radiation sickness.
