Turkmen opposition chooses single candidate
Turkmen opposition in emigration has nominated a single contender for presidential election. As a prominent activist of Turkmen opposition, former deputy prime minister (1996-98) Alexander Dodonov told REGNUM, last night members of all Turkmen opposition forces had a meeting in Kiev (Ukraine). The single candidate from opposition is former deputy prime minister, former head of the Turkmen Central Bank Khudaiberdy Orazov.
Speaking on the situation in Turkmenistan, Dodonov noted that, according to his information, outburst of reaction is registered in the country. Unreliable people from the point of view of the government are being taken to prison, many of them under house arrest. It is too early to speak now about opposition activists returning to Turkmenistan, Dodonov explained. It is necessary to prepare public opinion in the country and abroad. We are trying to watch the situation in the country as close as possible, but it is too early to speak of a comeback.
