Romanian president: Frozen conflicts in post-Soviet territory pose threat to EU

The frozen conflicts in South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Transdnestr and Nagorno Karabakh pose a serious threat to stability of the European Union, Romania’s President Traian Basescu said in an interview to Le Monde. “This very dangerous area will become in 2007 EU and NATO’s east border,” the Romanian leader stressed.

Basescu called upon international community to apply its effort for soonest settlement of the frozen conflicts at Europe’s gate. “Romania will not be able to settle those frozen conflicts on its own,” the Romanian president stressed. According to him, the conflicts can be enkindled again at any time and they pose a serious threat to European stability. “Only if there is a common political will of the EU, the United States and Turkey those problems can be settled,” Basescu supposes. “If we fail to find a common language, the area will remain a source of threat for the whole Europe.”
