Soltanieh: Authority of IAEA seriously undermined under political motivation of UNSC
The decision to cut technical aid to Iran made by IAEA Board of Governors undermined authority of the agency: For the first time in the history of IAEA, the promotional statutory pillar of the statute has been put in serious jeopardy, Iran's envoy to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ali-Asghar Soltanieh said on Thursday in Vienna. Professionalism and impartiality of the agency should not be undermined through politically motivated decisions of the United Nation Security Council which is trying to dictate the Agency on what, how and when to deprive a developing member state of technical cooperation which is solely aimed at humanitarian and peaceful uses, Soltanieh said.
The IAEA Board of Governors passed the decision to halt half of technical aid programs for Iran. The decision was made unanimously under Resolution 1737 of the UN Security Council. According to the decision, IAEA participation will be limited in 22 of the 55 programs of cooperation with Iran. The measure was recommended by Mohamed ElBaradei in his recent report on Iran’s nuclear program, IRNA reports.
