Russia agrees to Moldova’s proposals on security zone disarmament

Read it in Russian

Russian delegation to the Joint Control Commission (JCC) made a statement at a Commission session in Bendery on March 22 that it supported proposals of Moldavia for the population in the Transdnestr (Transdniestria, Transnistria) conflict zone to voluntarily give up arms and ammunition. The proposals also concerned the number of peacekeeping contingent in the security zone. In particular, Moldavia says she intends to one-sidedly exchange her two peacekeeping battalions in the area of the villages Koshnitsa and Kochiery for two independent peacekeeping companies.

At the session, the Russian delegation introduced its own package of amendments that develop the proposals of the Moldavian delegation. Both amending versions will be discussed at the next JCC session. Russian Commission co-chairman Viktor Shanin called the situation “a meaningful step forward.”
