President of Iran denied visa to the US, fails to speak in United Nations
President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad cancelled a visit to New York where he planned to address the UN Security Council. As Ekho Moskvy reported on March 23, this happened because the president and his team received American visas too late.
It is expected that on March 24, the UN SC will start voting on the resolution on Tehran. The document envisions imposing more severe sanctions on Iran if it does not give up its nuclear program.
The anti-Iranian sanctions suggested by the authors of the resolution include limitaions of arms trade with Tehran and restrictions of foreign visits of some Iranian officials and commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. Besides, the project suggests that countries and international organizations abstain from giving Iran credits and grants, except for those allocated for humanitarian needs.
The resolution project also contains names of 15 people and 13 companies blamed of being connected to the neclear and missile programs of the country. In this aspect, the resolution projects' authors suggest freezing foreign bank accounts of those in the list.
It is expected that Iran's foreign ministry's head Manuchehr Mottaki will speak in the UN instead of Ahmadinejad.
