Russia’s FM: Countries participating in Erna Raid taint cherished memory of their own soldiers
A military-sport competition Erna Raid is starting today, Aug 6, in Estonia. 28 teams from Estonia and other countries are to take part in it. Among new contestants are soldiers of special units from Portugal and Czech Republic, REGNUM correspondent reports referring to the Estonian defense ministry. Representatives of Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, and USA are also participating.
The Russian foreign ministry earlier issued an official statement decrying a campfire of Waffen SS veterans that had been held in Estonia. It was said, in particular, in the statement that holding in Estonia the military-sport Erna Raid competition based on the route of a raiding force that had been active in the rear of the Red Army in the August of 1941, is in line with the policy of Estonian authorities to glamorize Nazism. According to Russian FM information, the Estonian defense ministry finances the Raid.
It is surprising that these days, some countries-members of the anti-Hitler coalition and Resistance easily dispatch their representatives to the ‘Erna Raid,’ forgetting that they are thereby supporting those who have quite a peculiar understanding of the historical role played by Waffen SS and Abwehr. By doing this, they also taint the cherished memory of their own soldiers fallen in the fight against the Hitlerite regime. Support of such action having obviously prevocational implications cannot be regarded as anything other than indulging attempts to popularize Nazism and revise the outcomes of the World War II, the ministry's statement reads.
