Timoshenko’s bloc sues Ukraine’s Central Election Commission again
Yulia Timoshenko’s Bloc (BYT) has turned to Pechersky District Court in Kiev with a claim against Ukraine’s Central Election Commission after its refusal to register 34 initiative groups for collecting signatures for a referendum to amend the constitution, press office of the BYT told a REGNUM correspondent today. The documents were filed to the court on August 20.
Yulia Timoshenko believes the whole process will take no longer than a week, even in case the Central Election Commission files an appeal. Timoshenko insists upon holding a nation-wide referendum on September 30, together with the extraordinary parliamentary elections. BYT proposes nine key issues to be put on voting regarding the political structure, including the form of governance in Ukraine, nation-wide election of judges, depriving top governmental officials, judges and members of the parliament of their immunity and increasing effort to combat corruption.
On August 20, the Central Election Commission ruled to deny registration of initiative groups for collecting signatures to hold the referendum, for the reason that a number of issues proposed for the referendum contradict the Ukrainian constitution.
