Monument to Great Patriotic War soldiers dismantled, but they promise to restore it (Georgia)
The head of Kurta municipality that includes the village of Tamarasheni, David Datashvili categorically denied reports released today that a monument to Soviet soldiers killed in the Great Patriotic War was destroyed in Tamarasheni (the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone), reports a REGNUM correspondent.
As David Datashvili told REGNUM, the monument was dismantled temporarily for restoration and approximately in two weeks it will be placed in a local school yard. The obelisk was erected in 1980s in the yard of the local school on money of residents of Tamarasheni, who thus paid homage to their relatives killed in the Great Patriotic War. During the war in the South Ossetian territory, the building of the school burned down and the monument was damaged. It was even more damaged in an earthquake. So, the authorities decided to restore the obelisk and place it in te4h yard of the school that was built instead of the one that burned down; it several dozens meters away from where it was placed before. The money for the restoration comes from the Georgian authority. We expect the restoration to be completed in two weeks approximately, Data Datashvili announced.
