Russia will be asked for information about possible links of assassins of Anna Politkovskaya with Latvia
Latvian law enforcers will get in contact with their colleagues in Russia to obtain information about possible links between assassins of Novaya Gazeta reporter Anna Politkovskaya with crimes committed in Latvia, Latvian Foreign Minister Ivar Godmanis said in an interview to LNT channel (Latvia) today.
The minister was asked to comment on yesterday’s statement made by Russian Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika that assassination of the reporter was disclosed. In particular, Chaika said it had been committed by a criminal group led by a man of Chechen origin; the group reportedly carried out contract murders in the Latvian territory as well.
Answering a question whether the Russian side is obliged to inform Latvia about it, Godmanis said that no treaty is signed between Latvia and Russia about cooperation in law enforcement that envisages such procedure. However, according to the minister, despite the fact, the legal cooperation is taking place and law enforcers of the two countries do exchange information under requests and he had no grounds to think otherwise in this certain case.
