Former Georgian foreign minister sues Central Election Commission
Leader of the Way of Georgia party Salome Zourabichvili intends to bring an action against the Central Election Commission at Tbilisi Administrative Court. Zourabichvili claims that an administrative legal act of August 3, 2007, must be declared void. The Way of Georgia Party hopes that the court will take the claim for its consideration, examines the issue and makes an objective decision.
Earlier, the Central Election Commission decided that the Way of Georgia Party leader has no right to participate in the presidential race in 2008, because, according to the election code, a presidential contender must live uninterrupted in Georgia within last 15 years. Salome Zourabichvili believes the question to be more of political nature than of a juridical one; however, she recognized that under the law she has no right to run for presidency. According to her, the question must be resolved by Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili.
Salome Zourabichvili was born in France in a family of emigrants and was granted the Georgian citizenship by President Saakashvili in March 2004. In 2003, she was appointed French Ambassador to Georgia.
