Armenian foreign minister meets NATO secretary-general
The Armenian Foreign Ministry assigns big importance to political consultations with NATO on Armenian foreign policy and security, Armenian Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanyan said at a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jaap de hoop Scheffer.
As REGNUM is told at the Armenian Foreign Ministry press office, during the meeting, the foreign minister stressed importance of implementing the Armenia NATO Individual Partnership Action Plan, in particular, elaborating the national security doctrine as well as legislative initiatives aimed at reforms in defense. He said that Armenia appreciates NATO and its member-states’ activity in implementing the IPAP, especially at the stage of consultations.
Oskanyan welcomed the decision of the alliance to appoint a new person in charge for the Armenia-NATO relations. During the meeting, the sides discussed issues regarding organization of political consultations Armenia-NATO in the format of 26+1. The sides also discussed Armenia’s participation in NATO peacekeeping operations. The sides exchanged opinions about the Kosovo issue, the situation in Afghanistan and regional processes. Under a request by the NATO secretary-general, the Armenian foreign minister also informed him on the current stage of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement.
