Estonian politicians call for resignation of PACE president
Estonian Social Democrats call big and foolish lies a statement made by PACE President Rene van der Linden that Russians in Estonia cannot vote. According to them, Linden must be immediately dismissed, Postimees newspaper (Estonia) reports.
According to the Estonian Social Democratic Party, an official, who with certainty insists while criticizing the Estonian law on elections that, according to his information, non-citizens are not allowed to vote, cannot be president of PACE. Thus, Linden must be dismissed as soon as possible, the Social Democrats believe. As Social Democrats’ international secretary Jörgen Siil believes, the question of Linden’s competence could be raised at the European Union by the Homeland Union – Res Publica, which is a member of the European People’s Party that joins European conservative parties. This could be done at the PACE session in Strasburg. According to Siil, this would do a favor to future PACE leadership: before subjecting anything to criticism, at least simple facts must be checked.
As REGNUM reported earlier, PACE President Rene van der Linden visited the Baltic countries in September and subjected to criticism leadership of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia for discriminating Russian-speaking population in the countries.
To remind, non-citizens are eligible for voting in Estonia at local elections, but do not have such right at parliamentary elections.
